From George Washington to John Page, 23 July 1794

To John Page

Philadelphia July 23. 1794.

Dear Sir,

Not knowing how, with certainty, to get the enclosed letter safely to its address, I have taken the liberty of putting it under cover to you, as the Gentlemen lives, I am told, in the County you do.1

I hope you have recovered your health perfectly, & that Mrs Page & your family are well.2 With very great esteem & regard I am—Dear Sir Your Obedt Hble Servt

Go: Washington

ALS, PHi: Dreer Collection.

1GW likely enclosed his letter to Mary Dabney Anderson of 20 July, and the gentleman presumably was her husband, Mathew Anderson.

2Page’s second wife, whom he married in 1790, was the poet Margaret Lowther Page (c.1760-1835), daughter of William Lowther of Scotland.
