2. Maxwell’s “old Trade” was soldiering. Before the American Revolution he served in the British army and took part in several major actions during the French and Indian War. He remained in the British army until 1774 as a colonel in the commissary department. He was a brigadier general in the Continental Army from October, 1776, to July, 1780.
