1Rand’s engraved broadside of Washington’s Farewell Address to the People of the United States is one of many of his printed works described in Ray Nash, American Penmanship, 1800–1850: A History of Writing and a Bibliography of Copybooks from Jenkins to Spencer (Worcester, Mass., 1969), 103.

2Benjamin Howard Rand (1792–1862) was a professional teacher of penmanship who published twenty-six copybooks and manuals on the subject (ibid., 20–21).
