1. The bill of exchange was drawn by David Ross, the former commercial agent of Virginia, on John Ross, a merchant-shipowner of Philadelphia. When the post-rider from Virginia reached that city, most probably on 28 April, JM was about to leave for New Jersey and did not return until the evening of 2 May. On 1 May Theodorick Bland had been able to cash the bill, even though it was drawn in JM’s favor. On 6 May JM signed a voucher acknowledging that he had received from Bland $332 15/90 in Pennsylvania currency (£100 Virginia currency) as his share of the bill of exchange for £500 (Papers of Madison description begins William T.
