1The bill of exchange was drawn by David Ross, the former commercial agent of Virginia, on John Ross, a merchant-shipowner of Philadelphia. When the post-rider from Virginia reached that city, most probably on 28 April, JM was about to leave for New Jersey and did not return until the evening of 2 May. On 1 May Theodorick Bland had been able to cash the bill, even though it was drawn in JM’s favor. On 6 May JM signed a voucher acknowledging that he had received from Bland $332 15/90 in Pennsylvania currency (£100 Virginia currency) as his share of the bill of exchange for £500 (Papers of Madison description begins William T. Hutchinson, William M. E. Rachal, et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison (6 vols. to date; Chicago, 1962——). description ends , III, 60, n. 8; V, 204, n. 1; Bland’s and JM’s vouchers dated 6 May, MSS in Va. State Library; JM to Jefferson, 6 May 1783, in Boyd, Papers of Jefferson description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson (18 vols. to date; Princeton, N.J., 1950——). description ends , VI, 264–65).
