Elbridge Gerry to Dolley Madison, 3 March 1814 (Abstract)

§ Elbridge Gerry to Dolley Madison. 3 March 1814, “Senate Chamber.” “Mr Gerry presents his best respects to Mrs. Madison, & sends a letter this momen⟨t⟩ received from their honest friend at Lynn to herself & a letter accompanying it to himself. The latter contains a paragraph respecting small fishing boats, restrained by the embargo law so as to be useless to their needy owners; to be submitted to the perusal of the President.”

RC (ICHi: Elbridge Gerry Collection, filed at 30 Mar. 1814). 1 p. Enclosures not found, but the first-mentioned was evidently Lynn, Massachusetts, shoe manufacturer Ebenezer Breed’s 22 Feb. 1814 letter to Dolley Madison (offered for sale in Parke-Bernet Catalogue No. 2101 [1962], item 161), stating that he had sent her five pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers, along with slippers for JM.
