Monticello Sep. 9. 1795
Dear Sir
I am to acknolege the receipt of your favor of Aug. 5. I have not yet heard from Mr. Swan of the arrival of the three ton of rods, but being very nearly out of rods, I have sent off a waggon for a load in confidence of the arrival. As three ton but barely suffice for a quarter, and it is necessary I should have some stock on hand to guard me against accidents of delay, I must pray you to send me another ton immediately. I inclose you an order on Mr. Barnes for 470. Dollars to pay for the three ton before ordered, the ton now desired, and the stove expected. I shall hope to have your opinion on the kitchen stove before you send it. I am with great esteem Dear Sir Your friend & servt

Lownes’s letter of Aug. 5., recorded in SJL as received 18 Aug. 1795, has not been found. SJL also records missing letters from Lownes to TJ of 3 Dec. 1794, 23 Feb., 7 May, 6 Nov., 14 Dec. 1795, and 2 Feb. 1796, as well as from TJ to Lownes of 20 Nov., 18 Dec. 1794, 26 Mch., 6 May, 14 June, 20 July, 22 Oct., 25 Nov. 1795, and 17 Jan., 27 Mch. 1796. Letters from TJ to Samuel & John Swann of 4 Sep. 1795, and to John Swann of 24 Sep. 1795, both recorded in SJL, also have not been found.
This day TJ wrote a brief note to John Barnes advising that he was drawing on him in Lownes’s favor for $470 at six days’sight and requesting him to honor the draft (PrC in CSmH; presumably the letter to Barnes recorded in SJL under 10 Sep. 1795).
