From George Washington to Joshua Loring, 6 February 1777

To Joshua Loring

Head Quarters Morris Town 6th Feby 1777

Sir

This will be delivered to you by Major Edmenston who was sent down by Genl Schuyler to go into NYork upon parole, to return, or send out an Officer of equal Rank.

If Major Williams of Colo. Rawlins’s Battalion has not been already sent out, I desire he may be the Officer sent in Exchange. If he should have been sent out, I shall be glad that either Major Brown or Major Wells of Connecticut may be released.1 I am &c.

Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; two copies, P.R.O., 30/55, Carleton Papers; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. The copies in P.R.O. are addressed to William Howe.

1Gen. William Howe agreed to exchange Maj. William Edmestone for either of these officers provided Edmestone was allowed to go to Canada as he wished (see Howe to Philip Schuyler, 18 Feb. 1777, in P.R.O., 30/55, Carleton Papers). The exchange did not take place, however, because of Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler’s reluctance to permit Edmestone to travel through American territory. “Major Brown” apparently is Thomas Brown, who served as a major in the Connecticut militia from March 1775 until December 1776 when he took command of Lt. Col. Experience Storr’s Connecticut militia regiment. Brown, who was captured at the Battle of Long Island in August 1776, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in February 1778 (see Hinman, Historical Collection description begins Royal R. Hinman, comp. A Historical Collection, from Official Records, Files &c., of the Part Sustained by Connecticut, during the War of the Revolution. Hartford, 1842. description ends , 163, 314, 398).
