From John Jay to Robert R. Livingston, 14 June 1782

To Robert R. Livingston

Bordeaux 14th. June 1782

Dear Robt.

My Letter of the 11 May1 mentioned my being called to Paris by a Letter from Dr Franklin—our Journey thus far afforded much variety, and excepting some bad Roads, Fleas, & Bugs, was not unpleasant—both Spanish and French Biscay contain a number of romantic pretty Scenes, and I assure you we found ourselves perfectly disposed to enjoy the Beauties of this charming Season— Our Health has been greatly improved, or I may say, restored by the Journey. The Rheumatism has left me, and the only disagreable Circumstance which at present attends us is the Indisposition of our little Girl, who has the hooping Cough, and is cutting her Tooth. We have taken the Liberty of naming you for her God Father. I hope Mrs Livingston will one of these Days give you an opportunity of laying the same obligation upon me.

We have recd. many Attentions and Civilities both here and at Bayonne— Mr Bondfield has been particularly obliging.2

The Inhabitants of this City are preparing to present their King with a Ship of the Line. Commerce flourishes here—some say more than before the War— Bayonne I hear is soon to be declared a free port—

Remember us to Mr & Mrs. Morris, Mr & Mrs. Meredith3 Gouvr. Morris, and such of your Family as may be with You Adieu I am Dear Robt your Friend—

John Jay
