Receipt for Nicholas Lewis, 25 September 1792

Receipt for Nicholas Lewis

Sep. 25. 1792.

Recieved from Colo. Nicholas Lewis the books and papers relative to my affairs and his superintendance of them from 1783. to this day and I hereby give him a full acquittal and discharge thereof and of all balances and demands on account of the same. Witness my hand the day and year above written.

Th: Jefferson

MS (Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, on deposit ViU); entirely in TJ’s hand; endorsed by Lewis.

A year earlier Lewis had announced his intention to retire from the superintendance of TJ’s financial affairs, although he continued to act in that capacity. Anticipating a permanent return to Monticello in March of 1793, TJ settled his accounts with Lewis, trusting Thomas Mann Randolph, Jr., to oversee his affairs during the interim (TJ to Nathaniel Pope, 7 Oct. 1791, and to John Garland Jefferson, 11 Oct. 1791; Betts, Farm Book, description begins Edwin M. Betts, ed., Thomas Jefferson’s Farm Book, Princeton, 1953 description ends 150).
