Tobias Lear to Pierre-Charles L’Enfant
[Philadelphia] Septr 1st—7 O’clock A.M. [1791]
Dear Sir,
The President wishes to have the map of the federal City to shew to some Gentlemen about nine o’clock this morning—and requests you to send it either by the bearer at this time, or if it should be more convenient for you, he shall call for it a little before nine.1 I am Dear Sir with much esteem Your most Obedt Servt

1. When he arrived in Philadelphia at the end of August, L’Enfant presented his plan for the Federal City to GW but retained his map in order to have it engraved before the initial sale of lots in October. While in Philadelphia L’Enfant placed the map in the hands of a French engraver, M. Pigalle, who failed to complete his task before the sale (see Tobias Lear to GW, 6 Oct.; see also Thomas Jefferson to GW, 8 Sept., n.4).
