I promise to pay Thomas Jefferson his Heirs or Assigns, on demand, the sum of one hundred and three Dollars and ninety three Cents, for value recieved.—

In 1810, when TJ brought this debt to the attention of one of the executors of Lewis’s estate, he described it as “monies furnished” to Lewis “some time before he set out on his Western expedition” (, 2:294, 336).
