ALS, DLC: Thomas Jefferson Papers.

1The farm of Samuel Powel on the Schuylkill River was west of the Market Street bridge. Jefferson accompanied GW there on 22 Aug., and they observed the operation of the new threshing machine developed by Alexander Anderson (c.1754–1824). Powel described the machine in a letter of 25 Nov. 1791 that Arthur Young published in his Annals of Agriculture, 17 (1792), 206–8.
