From Thomas Lehré

Charleston So Ca July 10th 1818—

Dear Sir

By yesterday, and this days mail, I have Sent you three of the daily papers of this City by which you will see how grateful even our rising generation are towards you. It is with the greatest pleasure I inform you, that I have of late received letters from a number of your old friends in various parts of this State, in which they express a great desire to know whether I can inform them of the State of your health, at the Same time offering up their prayers to the Throne of Grace that you may enjoy1 a long Life, and every blessing this World affords, as a just reward for your great and meritorious Services to our Dear and beloved Country.—

Our friends in this part of the Union, feel a lively Interest in the Emancipation of our Fellow Men in South America, and are anxious to know how our affairs with Spain, are likely to terminate. Whenever you can find time to drop me a line on the above Subjects, be assured it will be received with great pleasure. I remain with every sentiment of esteem—Dear Sir Yours most Sincerely

Tho: Lehré

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Former P. of the U.S.”; endorsed by TJ as received 22 July 1818 and so recorded in SJL.

The daily papers of this city that Lehré sent in this letter and that of 9 July 1818 probably included the Charleston City Gazette and Commercial Daily Advertiser of 7, 9, and 10 July. The issue of 7 July reported the toasts of the Saint Andrew’s Parish Independence Day celebration, the ninth of which was to “Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.—The two brilliant constellations who have guided the American people to glory and happiness—May the light they have shed, never be obscured.” Two days later the newspaper published the toasts of the ’76 Association, with the fourth honoring “Thomas Jefferson, the polar star of Republicanism—Let us steer by this brilliant light, and we will pursue the strait course.” Finally, on 10 July the paper printed an account of the Charleston Republican Artillery’s celebration, with its fourth toast saluting “Thomas Jefferson.—Next to Mount Vernon, we turn a grateful eye to Monticello’s height.”
