To Thomas Jefferson from La Villebrune, 19 February 1783

From La Villebrune

[Baltimore,] 19 Feb. 1783. Appends copy of a letter from La Luzerne to La Villebrune of 13 Feb. which shows that “Les Bruits de paix S’accredittent et que Son Excellence persiste a croire quil convient encore de Différer notre Départ.”

RC (DLC); in a clerk’s hand, signed by La Villebrune. La Luzerne’s letter, copied below that of La Villebrune, had enclosed “un hand bill qui ajoute infiniment aux Esperances que nous avons d’une paix prochaine et qui même nous permêt de croire qu’elle est actuellement conclue.” La Luzerne added that he thought under these circumstances La Villebrune ought not “mêttre à La voile avant que nous ayons des nouvelles ulterieures” and asked that he “communiquer Cette Lettre a M. D’yerferson. Il se Loue infiniment de vos intentions.”

The handbill was undoubtedly a printing of the King’s speech that La Luzerne also sent to TJ on 13 Feb.
