RC (MHi); addressed: “The Late President of US of N AMa Mail”; franked and postmarked; endorsed by TJ as an “insane” letter received 12 Dec. 1810 from an “Illegible” author (see reproduction elsewhere in this volume) and so recorded in SJL; with unrelated notations by Overton and a bill to him from Cunningham & Company on verso of address leaf.

Samuel Overton (d. 1823) was a resident of Louisa County. In 1804 he moved in with his brother John Overton at Travellers Rest, a plantation near Nashville (Samuel Overton to John Overton, 20 Aug. 1804 [T: Claybrook Papers]; will of Samuel Overton, 26, 30 May 1819, recorded 11 Oct. 1823 [T: Davidson Co. Will Book, 8:260–1]).
