middletons pencils: the black lead pencils produced in London by John Middleton were frequently advertised for sale in American newspapers (Henry Petroski, The Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance [New York, 1990], 5, 127; Gazette of the United States, 27 Mch. 1802; New York Evening Post, 24 Nov. 1802).

precie’s historiqué: probably Jean Nicholas Berthe, Précis Historique de la Maladie qui a Régné dans l’Andalousie en 1800 (Paris, 1802; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 921).

boyers french grammar: probably Abel Boyer, The Compleat French Master for Ladies and Gentlemen, which enjoyed wide popularity and numerous reprintings since its initial publication in 1694 (DNB description begins H. C. G. Matthew and Brian Harrison, eds., Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, In Association with The British Academy, From the Earliest Times to the Year 2000, Oxford, 2004, 60 vols. description ends , s.v. “Boyer, Abel”).

In 1802, Duane published editions of the new census of the United States of 1800 and the old census of 1790 (Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends Nos. 3288, 3289).

letter to th jefferson: Junius Philænus, A Letter to Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States (New York, 1802).

letter to alexr hamilton: Tom Callender, Letters to Alexander Hamilton, King of the Feds. Ci-Devant Secretary of the Treasury of the United States of America, Inspector-General of the Standing Armies Thereof, Counsellor at Law. &c. &c. &c. (New York, 1802; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 3279).

requisite tables: Nevil Maskelyne, Tables Requisite to be used with the Nautical Ephemeris for finding the Latitude and Longitude at Sea (London, 1781; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 3811).

perins french grammar: possibly A Grammar of the French Tongue, Grounded Upon the Decisions of the French Academy, one of several popular educational works on the French language by John Perrin of Dublin (Shaw-Shoemaker description begins Ralph R. Shaw and Richard H. Shoemaker, comps., American Bibliography: A Preliminary Checklist for 1801–1819, New York, 1958–63, 22 vols. description ends , No. 7030; DNB description begins H. C. G. Matthew and Brian Harrison, eds., Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, In Association with The British Academy, From the Earliest Times to the Year 2000, Oxford, 2004, 60 vols. description ends , s.v. “Perrin, Jean Baptiste”).

history christianity: probably Joseph Priestley, An History of the Corruptions of Christianity, published in two octavo volumes (Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 1526; TJ to Mary Jefferson Eppes, 25 Apr. 1803).

mag n. america: most likely, this entry meant to record the purchase of a map of North America. TJ also purchased one about the same time from James Cheetham (see TJ to Cheetham, 17 June 1803, and Charles Ludlow to TJ, 24 June 1803).

annual biography probably refers to William Bingley, Animal Biography; or, Anecdotes of the Lives, Manners, and Economy, of the Animal Creation, Arranged According to the System of Linnæus, 3 vols. (London, 1803). The female (“femeal”) biography is probably Mary Hays, Female Biography; or, Memoirs of Illustrious and Celebrated Women, of All Ages and Countries, 6 vols. (London, 1803). Advertisements for both new works appeared in Philadelphia newspapers in June 1803, about the time TJ purchased them from Duane (Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 7 June 1803; Gazette of the United States, 24 June 1803).

may 6 by cash: this payment was not recorded in TJ’s financial records. To arrive at the total of $76.86½, this amount should be $29.05½. For the cash entries of $22.50 and $25.31, see MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1064, 1065.
