To Thomas Jefferson from C. W. F. Dumas, 14 November 1787
From C. W. F. Dumas
The Hague, 14 Nov. 1787. Avails himself of a French courier to transmit the enclosed, which shows that his situation, with that of a mass of good citizens, is like that of the lamb in the fable. [Postscript:] Having missed the courier, is obliged to send the letter by regular post.
RC (DLC); 2 p.; in French; endorsed. FC (Dumas Papers, Rijksarchief, The Hague). Recorded in SJL as received 20 Nov. 1787. Enclosure: Dumas to John Jay, same date, stating that the reigning system will ruin the province because of its inability to restrain the disorders which occur everywhere; rests his cause, his honor, and his interests with God and Congress (FC in Dumas Papers, Rijksarchief, The Hague; translation printed in iii, 597–9).
