Sir,

I have the honor to enclose you an estimate of expenditures for the Army of the United States, for the year 1802, conformably to the Act of the 16th inst: The several items which compose the aggregate sums in this estimate, where they are not specified, will be found on a recurrence to an annual estimate made by this department, under date of the 28. of Oct. 1801.

I have also subjoined a supplementary estimate exhibiting the sums which will be required to carry the Act above alluded to, into complete operation.

Enclosure: “Estimate of Expenditures for the Army of the United States for the year 1802, conformably to the Act of Congress passed on the 16th. instant, entitled an ‘Act fixing the Military Peace establishment of the United States,’” 27 Mch. 1802; listing total expenditures of $948,762.08, including $292,272 for pay of all ranks, $201,027.40 for subsistence (1,435,910 rations), $93,000 for military pensions, $71,750 for the Indian Department, $70,500 for building and completing fortifications and barracks, $66,766.88 for arsenals, magazines, and armories, $66,630 for clothing, $48,000 for expenditures “of what was heretofore denominated the ‘Quarter Masters Department,’” and lesser amounts for contingent expenses of the War Department, the medical department, forage, bounties and premiums, and the corps of engineers; second section of document, with heading “In addition to the foregoing estimate, the following sums will be necessary, to meet the expenditures which will arise in consequence of discharging the Officers, non Commissioned Officers, and privates, who are supernumerary by the Act of the 16th. instant, entitled an ‘Act fixing the military peace establishment of the United States,’ and for carrying the same into complete operation,” lists expenses of pay, subsistence, clothing, forage, medical department, quartermaster’s department, bounties and premiums, allowances for officers and soldiers to be discharged, and contingencies, totaling $158,500 (MS in DNA: RG 46, LPPM; in a clerk’s hand, signed by Dearborn). Enclosed in TJ to the Senate and the House of Representatives, 30 Mch.
