To John Jay from Peter Augustus Jay, 30 October 1818
From Peter Augustus Jay
New York 30 Oct 1818
My dear Father
Maria & Nancy arrived in town yesterday & are not the worse for their ride. I have recd your letter of the 26th. inst1 which they brought & have the one to Lord Amherst2 to the Post Office to go by the packet. I shall observe your Directions concerning the Lisbon Wine. I was sorry I could see so little of William when he was here during the whole time that he was in town & indeed ever since till yesterday I have been obliged to be in Court every day. I have at length received the Money due from Mr Mumford viz $1476. $1452. 57/100 It is proposed to build a Church for Mr Frey the converted Jew, & one of his Congregation applied to me two days ago to know if you would sell them for that purpose four lots on Walker Street. I told him that you were not disposed to sell at present. But he pressed me to mention it to you which I promised to do. I have heard nothing more of the African free school. The Canal Street lots I am in hopes will rise in Value after the Regulation of that street sufficiently to pay all the Expences altho they are likely to prove very heavy.3
Mr Canfield was here yesterday & I agreed to lend to a Mr Saml Palmer $250. To prevent the necessity of his coming to town I consented that he should shew the title to his Land to William who if he approved it would draw the bond & Mortgage which are to be to the Corporation for relief &c. the title of which I will write below. I am my dear father. Your affect. Son,
Peter Augustus Jay
