To John Jay from Peter Jay, 15 April 1765

From Peter Jay

[Rye 15th April 1765]

Dear Johnny.

On receipt of this Letter, you must immediately deliver the inclosed to Mr. Auchmuty—1 As much noise is made in Town abot. Jemmy’s suffering the Bills of the Governrs. of the College to be returned protested,2 I send you the rough draught of my Letter to Mr. Auchmuty on that head—Jemmy is indeed very remiss for ^in^ not sending his Reasons to them for his Proceedgs:, and so are the Governrs: blamable for drawg: without his orders for it. I suppose there may be abot. ^£^1400 in Jemmy’s hands, but this sum will doubtless be reduced very low, when for his Services & the great Expences attendg: the transactg: their Affairs, is deductd: therefrom. I would have you to peruse the rough draught carefully, & make yourself master of the Affair, in ordr. to vindicate your Brother’s Character wch. I expect is now ^undeservedly^ pretty roughly handled. All this seems tho the truth of the whole Matter I believe is, that Jemmy is determined to keep Sufficiently in his hands to pay for his trouble & Expenses and not be at the Mercy of the Governrs. to allow him what they shall think proper, but however we must be Silent yet abot. these Matters, but you must acquaint yr. Aunt Chambers3 of the whole, who will be also silent abot. it—you must send me the rough draught back again in yr. Box when it comes up—I am Dear Johnny Yr Affecte: Father
