Egbert Benson to David Humphreys

New York, 31 July 1789. Requests Humphreys to “mention to the President that all the Gentlemen from our State have agreed to suggest Mr John C. Ten Broeck as surveyor for Hudson and a majority of Us have agreed as to Jeremiah Lansing to be surveyor at Albany.”1

1. John C. Ten Broeck (1755–1835) served in New York regiments during the Revolution and was a member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati. On 3 Aug. GW appointed him to the post of surveyor at Hudson, and in March 1792 he was made inspector for the port (Executive Journal, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends 1:10, 12, 103, 111). GW appointed Jeremiah Lansing (1754–1817) surveyor at Albany in August 1789, and he served until his resignation in early 1790. In 1798–99 Lansing was a member of the New York legislature.
