From John Adams to Richard Harrison, 24 February 1787

Grosvenor Square Feb. 24. 1787

I have received the Letter you did me, the honour to write me, on the 21st of this Month, and your claim inclosed in it. In relieving the Necessities of Captain Erwin and his People, you undoubtedly acted the Part of a generous and worthy Citizen; but as it is a matter, which comes not in any degree, within my Department, it is not in my Power to order your reimbursement here. I will however transmit your Letter and Claim to Congress, who will do what their Wisdom Shall dictate concerning it. You will do well to transmit a Duplicate with a Memorial by another early opportunity, and this Letter or a Copy of it, if you think proper.

With great Esteem, I have the honour / to be, Sir your most obedient / and most humble Servant

John Adams.
