2. Macpherson to McHenry, May 3, 1799 (copy, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress). In this letter Macpherson reviewed the movements of the forces under his command from March 19 to March 23, 1799. He stated that he had dismissed the volunteer companies and had left the regular troops under the command of Major Mahlon Ford at Reading. He recommended that the regular troops be garrisoned at Reading, Allentown, and Easton.
