Norfolk Virginia 16. April 1803.

Dear Sir

I take the liberty to introduce to your acquaintance, personally, the Honourable Captain John Murray of His Majesty’s Navy, third Son of the Earl of Dunmore,2 in whose favour I beg leave to request your particular Civilities; assuring you that you will find him perfectly to merit whatever attention and good Offices you may have the kindness to render him during his visit to New York.

1. John Hamilton was the British consul at Norfolk, Virginia.

2. John Murray, fourth Earl of Dunmore, sat in the House of Lords as a representative peer from Scotland from 1761 to 1769. He was governor of New York from 1770 to 1771 and governor of Virginia from 1772 to 1776. He was elected to the House of Lords in 1776, 1780, and 1784, and was governor of the Bahama Islands from 1787 to 1796.
