Dear Sir

I have consulted the president of the Bank2 respectg the information you required in your Letter of the 11th. Instant.3 He informs me that you must send a regular Power of attorney reciteing the power left by John Carter, that it must be attested by one of the chief Magistrates of your City authourizing whom you please to receive the dividend & vote for Mr Carter’s Shares.4 I wrote you some time past on this subject & forwarded your Letters from Mr Carter but as they were sent on to Albany It is propable you have not reced it—for which reason I now trouble you with duplicate.5

I am with great Respect   Sir   Your most Obdt Servt

Alexr Hammilton Esqr.

LC, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

1This letter is incorrectly dated “Decr 8,” for Chaloner in the first sentence refers to H’s letter of “the 11th Instant.” As the letter following in the letter book is dated December 18, this letter was also probably written on that date.

2The president of the Bank of North America, Thomas Willing.

3Letter not found.

4H was the legal representative of John Carter (John B. Church). The shares to which Chaloner refers were shares of stock of the Bank of North America owned by Church.
