The Secretary of the Treasury will cause to be paid to the Director of the Mint,1 the sum of Five thousand Dollars; to be applied to the purposes of said Establishment.

1On November 27, 1792, David Rittenhouse, director of the Mint, had requested Thomas Jefferson to procure five thousand dollars for current expenses (ALS, RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters, 1790–1799, National Archives). On the following day Jefferson wrote to Washington and enclosed the Rittenhouse letter (ALS, RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters, 1790–1799, National Archives).
