United States May 31st 1792.

By the President’s command T. Lear has the honor to transmit to the Secretary of the Treasury the enclosed copy of a Letter from the Secretary of State to the President;1 and to request that the Secretary of the Treasury will let the President know when the sum mention’d in the enclosed Letter will be conveniently ready for his order.

1On May 30, 1792, Thomas Jefferson wrote to the President that Congress had appropriated fifty thousand dollars “to defray any expence which may be incurred in relation to the intercourse between the United States and foreign nations.” He asked that the money be made available (LC, Thomas Jefferson Papers, Library of Congress).
