From James Madison to David Gelston, 24 June 1806 (Abstract)

To David Gelston, 24 June 1806 (Abstract)

§ To David Gelston. 24 June 1806, Department of State. “Your letter of the 20th. inst. to Mr. Gallatin,1 communicated by him to this Department requires no further answer than a reference to mine of the 19th. inst., with the single remark that as spars are not understood to fall within any of the prohibitions contained in the instructions now in force, Capt. Stofford is at liberty to procure & carry with him articles of that character.”

Letterbook copy (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15). 1 p.

1The letter stated that the British consul had informed Gelston that Captain Stopford of the Chichester was under orders “to procure a load of lumber … & other articles necessary to build a Hospital at Barbadoes,” and that “he also wishe[d] to take in a few spars.” Gelston requested Gallatin’s instructions, if deemed necessary, on the matter (CtMyMHi: David Gelston Papers).
