From John Jay to Diego de Gardoqui, 4 October 1785

To Diego de Gardoqui

NYork 4 Octr. 1785

Dr Sr.

Mrs. Jay is greatly obliged by the pleasing & polite attention wh. dictated yr. Card of Saturday last,1 & the valuable Present which accompanied it. She wd. have replied to it immediately, but as I was then out of Town, she wished to consult me on so delicate an occasion, especially as several Considerations have weight with public Characters, that do not apply to private Individuals. These Considerations, wh. I will take an opportunity of explaining to You, induce me to think it adviseable for her to return the Boxes.2 Be assured however that this Mark of Attention and the Friendship & Regard it manifests, will never cease to make the most agreable Impressions, and that we shall be happy in every opportunity of testifying the Sentiments of Esteem & Attachmt. which we entertain for You—with the best wishes for your Health and Happiness I am Dr Sr your most obt. & very hble Servt

The Honb. Mr Gardoqui—

Dft, NNC (EJ: 8192).

1Gardoqui to SLJ, Saturday, [1 Oct. 1785], not found.

2Gardoqui had set out to ingratiate himself with SLJ, inferring, as he had written to Floridablanca, “that a little management in dealing with her and a few timely gifts will secure the friendship of both,” as SLJ “dominates” JJ and “her opinion prevails.” Gardoqui to Floridablanca, 3 Sept. 1785, SpMaAHN: Estado, leg. 3886.
