ENCLOSURE
Authorization for Tench Coxe

Should the Secretary of the Treasury find it adviseable The Supervisor of the district of Pensylvania is hereby authorised to act as Collector of the internal revenues for the city and county of Pensylvania. Given under my hand at Washington this 20th. day of July 1802.

MS (DLC); in TJ’s hand; with Gallatin’s instructions to the commissioner of the revenue written below TJ’s signature and forwarded (see below). PrC (DLC).

COUNTY OF PENSYLVANIA: that is, Philadelphia.

On 25 July, Gallatin wrote William Miller requesting that he inform Tench Coxe that the president had authorized him “to continue to exercise the office of collector of the internal revenues” after he commenced his new office on 1 Aug. (RC in DLC; written on same sheet as TJ’s authorization above; addressed by Gallatin: “The Commissioner of the revenue”; endorsed).
