Sir,

Herewith you will receive the Letters you write for.4 But as I purpose to send them, or Copies of them, to the Congress, agreable to the Request of the Count de Vergennes, and have not yet had time to copy them; I suppose you will return them to me.5 I have the Honour to be &c

5On Aug. 7 Gérard de Rayneval wrote BF, enclosing three letters and promising to send two others momentarily (Library of Congress). Among BF’s papers at the APS are copies of JA’s letters to Vergennes of July 13, 17, 21, 26, and 27 (for which see Vergennes to BF, July 31). Among his papers at the University of Pa. Library are copies of the July 27 letter and Vergennes’ July 29 response.
