Mecom’s Oct. 29 letter is in XXXV, 666–7. For BF’s gift of textile goods to sell see our annotation of Catharine Greene to BF, May 8.

This evidently refers to a short letter (now missing) written in March, 1780, acknowledging receipt of some soap. Recently, however, Mecom had referred to it as dating from 1779: XXXIV, 200, 424; XXXV, 158, 666.

In the late fall of 1781, Mecom had returned to the home of Jane Flagg Greene, who died on April 6. Greene was survived by her husband, Elihu, and their children Sarah, Franklin, and Jane: XXXVI, 202; Catharine Greene to BF, May 8, above.

Above, May 8.

William Greene’s June 25 letter to BF, below, describes the plight of captive Ezekiel Durfey.

Most likely Catharine Ward Greene (1752–1782), the wife of Elihu Greene’s brother Christopher (1748–1830): Richard K. Showman et al., eds., The Papers of General Nathanael Greene (12 vols. to date, Chapel Hill, N.C., and London, 1976–), I, 20n, 38n.
