7. Le Veillard is probably referring to his notes on BF’s life that, based on this letter, we publish as [before Oct. 16?], above.
8. Noël-Gabriel-Luce de Villar was a professor of rhetoric at the Collège de La Flèche and friend to many philosophes, including Condorcet. Villar’s interest in these notes may stem from his involvement in two of Brissot de Warville’s literary endeavors: Correspondance universelle sur ce qui peut intéresser le bonheur de l’Homme et de la Société, which published its first issue in January, 1783, and the Jour. du Licée de Londres, which first appeared in January, 1784. Despite Villar’s efforts to promote the Correspondance universelle in France, the journal ceased publication after November, 1783. The Jour. du Licée de Londres ran for a year. Though no biography of BF ever appeared in its pages, the Licée did publish its own French translations of BF’s “Remarks concerning the Savages of North America” and “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America” (for which see [before Jan. 7] and [before March]): Biographie universelle; Claude Perroud, ed., J.-P. Brissot: Correspondance et papiers (Paris, [1912]), pp. xxi, 46–50, 74–7; Jean Sgard, ed., Dictionnaire des journaux, 1600–1789 (2 vols., Paris, 1991), 1, 265–6; 11, 659–60.
