5. For James Ross’s rifle company see Pa. delegates to the Lancaster County committee above, July 11, and for the new battalions his father’s letter above, Dec. 10. Young Ross was apparently not nominated. He retained his rank in the rifle battalion, which was reorganized the following January and renamed the first continental infantry, and attained his majority in it on Sept. 25, 1776. He was promoted to lieut. col. the next year, transferred to the 8th Pa., and played a role of some importance in the Battle of the Brandywine.
