4For BF’s account of Oswald’s discussions with Vergennes see BF’s journal of the peace negotiations. According to Vergennes, Oswald announced unofficially that George III was disposed to treat of a general peace, that he preferred negotiations be established in Paris, that the independence of the United States would not be an obstacle, and that Fox’s emissary would soon arrive to confirm all he had said: Vergennes to Montmorin, May 11, 1782, in Giunta, Emerging Nation, I, 385.
