The Committee for Foreign Affairs to the American Commissioners, 30 April 1778: résumé

The Committee for Foreign Affairs to the American Commissioners9

LS (two):1 American Philosophical Society; copy: Library of Congress; copy and transcript: National Archives

<York, April 30, 1778: We need to have word from you. The commerce committee will send you their contract with Hortalez & Cie., the heads of which are enclosed.2 We hear that you have concluded a treaty with France and Spain, and are anxious for confirmation before the British make proposals. Our foreign relations are before Congress, and some resolutions about them will probably be sent you soon. If we can back our currency with credit, we can defy Britain.>

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

9Published in Taylor, Adams Papers, VI, 74–5.

1Both signed by James Lovell.

2One page of the enclosure is in the APS; it contains the last two paragraphs of the contract adopted by Congress on April 7 (JCC, X, 316–18) and bears the notation “Minutes of the Contract with Mr. de Francès,” meaning Francy, Beaumarchais’ agent.
