From John Jay to James Duane, [11 October 1785]
To James Duane
[New York, 11 October 1785]
Dr Sir
Before your Return I agreed in thinking with the Agents of Massachusetts ^that such Letters^ should be written to the Judges as you will find herewith enclosed. We have on both Sides vacant places to fill up, and in my opinion a little Delay will not hurt us, for we expect important papers from England, and tho they will doubtless arrive this fall, yet the exact Time when cannot be ascertained—1 Yours sincerely
John Jay
The Honb. Mr Duane
ALS, NHi: Duane (EJ: 858). Endorsed: “Mr Jays note on / deferring Hearing / read 18th. Octr. 1785.” Enclosure: Dft of New York and, Massachusetts Agents to the Judges, not found; but see the New York and Massachusetts Agents to the Judges, 12 Oct. 1785, below.
