From Thomas Jefferson to William Davies?, 27 March 1781

To William Davies?

Mar. 27. 1781.

Not having that kind of knolege of the transactions of the artificers which is acquired by personal inspection, we think it will be better that a determination on the above point should be suspended until Colo. Davies shall become so far acquainted with them as will enable him to form a judgment on the subject.

Th: Jefferson

RC (Paul C. Richards Autographs, Brookline, Massachusetts, 1969); unaddressed, but probably a reply to William Davies, being written on verso of the address cover of his missing letter to TJ of 27 Mch. 1781 (Vol 5: 255); cover is addressed “His Excellency The Governor” in an unidentified hand and bears two almost identical notations in different clerical hands, one of which reads “Col. Davies’ Letter To Governor Jefferson respecting Anderson’s application for cooking & washing March 27. 81.”
