I have the honor of taking the earliest opportunity to transmit your Excellency two letters from Major Genl Phillips and one from Major General Baron de Reidisel which came inclosed to me from Major General Phillips.1 I have the honor to be with due respect Your Excellency’s most obt Sert

P.S. I take the liberty to inclose a Letter for Cornet Fitzhugh, which if there is nothing improper in it, you will be pleased to have delivered.2

1. The last letter from British major general William Phillips to GW, which has been found, is dated 7 July; Phillips did not enclose letters to be delivered to Clinton.
2. William Fitzhugh, father of Lt. Peregrine Fitzhugh, a prisoner in New York, had asked GW to forward this letter to his son (see William Fitzhugh to GW, 17 Aug.).
