From Thomas Jefferson to Archibald Cary and Others, Introducing John Paradise, 29 May [1786]

To Archibald Cary and Others, Introducing John Paradise

Paris May 29 [1786]

Dear Sir

This will be delivered you by Mr. Paradise who married a daughter of the late Colo. Ludwell of Virginia and who now comes to that country to make preparations for establishing himself and family in it. As a stranger and man of character he would have all the benefits of your civilities and attentions; but as a man of letters, of the purest integrity, of perfect goodness, and republican simplicity, you will consider his acquaintance and friendship as valuable acquisitions. In confidence that by making you acquainted, I serve and gratify both, I commit him to your friendly regards with assurances of the esteem with which I have the honor to be Dear Sir your friend and servant,

Th: Jefferson

PrC (DLC); at foot of text: “A. Cary. E. Pendleton. J. Blair. J. Page. Bellini. E. Randolph. Currie. Bev. Randolph. T. Lomax.” Another PrC (MHi); at foot of text: “Gl. Nelson. Rich. Adams. TM Randolph.” Both PrC are badly faded, but the texts are virtually identical; they have been compared and the text presented here has been taken from both copies. The date has been completed from an entry in SJL under this date which lists all of the above names, together with the following entry: “J. Madison. Or. [Orange] J. Walker. no copy retained.” All the names are bracketed, along with an entry for a letter of the same date to George Wythe; TJ wrote, outside the bracket: “of introduction for Paradise.”
