Th: Jefferson returns thanks to mr Brent for the paper he [ha]s been so kind as to restore to him. it is perfectly recognised & must by mistake have gotten among the public papers when he left the office of State. it’s greatest value at present however is in the new proof it has furnished of the friendly recollections of mr Brent; nothing being more soothing in retirement from the cares of public life than the reflection that we have made friends of our fellow-travellers in the same road. he salutes mr Brent with assurances of his sincere esteem & respect.
PoC (DLC); one word faint; endorsed by TJ; written on verso of left half, with PoC of TJ to Bernard Peyton, 1 Oct. 1819, on verso of right half, of undated cover sheet in George Blackburn’s hand. This note by Blackburn lists three letters he delivered around 16 Aug. 1818 when he visited Monticello in TJ’s absence, namely Hugh Holmes to TJ, 8 Aug. 1818; its enclosure; and a “Note from Mr Girardin to Mr Jefferson,” which is probably the missing introduction from Louis H. Girardin accounted for in note to Blackburn to TJ, 8 Mar. 1819.
