PrC (MHi); faded in part; at foot of text: “Mr. John Barnes.”

Barnes’s favor of Dec. 24., recorded in SJL as received 23 Jan. 1796 and mistakenly noted there as a letter of the same date, has not been found.

TJ’s draft of the 22 d. instant, not found, was in favor of Dr. David Jackson of Philadelphia for Dr. William Wardlaw of Charlottesville. TJ’s draft of this day ordered Barnes to pay Isaac Miller as described above at three days’sight (PrC in MHi; at foot of text: “Mr. John Barnes Mercht Philadelphia. S. 3d. street”). This draft was to pay Miller, the postmaster at Charlottesville, TJ’s quarterly postage charge of $18.965, plus another $30.00 for Thomas Mann Randolph, TJ having received the remaining $37.32 in cash from Miller (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 22, 24 Jan. 1796). According to SJL, TJ advised Barnes of the first draft in a letter of 22 Jan. 1796 (now missing).
