I drew on you about the 10th. or 11th. inst. in favor of William Wardlaw or order for 40. Dollars, of which this serves to advise you, if I did not write a letter of advice at the time. If I did, I omitted to keep a copy of it and it has escaped my memory. I am with esteem Dear Sir Your most obedt. servt

TJ’s draft in favor of Dr. William Wardlaw of Charlottesville is recorded in MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 11 July 1795. There is no record in SJL of an earlier letter to Barnes on this subject. A letter from Barnes to TJ of 22 June 1795, recorded in SJL as received 30 June 1795, has not been found.
