[Richmond] 18 Jan. 1781. Order to issue to Capt. Edmund Read a warrant for $35,000, to purchase “Three pair of officer’s boots and thirty two pair of boots for non commissioned officers and soldiers of his troop.” Countersigned: “Th: Jefferson. This is not to be paid till the warrants of this day in favor of Mr. Harrison and Colo. Clarke shall be paid.”

RC in Contingent Fund Vouchers (Vi); countersignature and instructions in TJ’s hand.

Edmund Read, captain of the light dragoons sent to Maryland with the Convention troops (James Wood to TJ, 20 Dec. 1780). There is a file copy of a letter from George Muter to Edmund Read of the present date in the War Office Letter Book (Vi), instructing Read to purchase the boots in Maryland because they are not available in Virginia. A minute in the War Office Journal (Vi) states that this letter was also countersigned by TJ.
