1. The committee composed of members of the House of Burgesses empowered by statute to supervise military expenditures (see 7 69–87) last examined and approved GW’s regimental accounts on 13 May 1757. After that date the money to pay the men in the Virginia Regiment no longer passed through GW’s hands (see Dinwiddie to GW, 16 May 1757 [second letter]). John Palmer was the clerk of this oversight committee.
