By the Martha Captn Brooke I have an oppertunity of Inclosing you the Invoices for York River, and to request that the Goods may be addressd to the care of Mr James Hill who is employed as a Steward to that Estate in the Room of Mr Josh Valentine deceasd.1
I have also to desire that you will Insure 14 Hhds of my Tobo by Captn Peterson, and Sixty three or four (I cannot tell which) of Mr Custis’s for some of whose Money I expect to have occasion to draw on you about the first of next Month.2 I have to beg the favour of you to put the Inclosed Letters into a safe Channel of Conveyance3 and you will thereby oblige Yr Most Hble Servt

1. Walter Brooke of the ship Martha cleared the South Potomac naval district on 6 Nov. bound for London. The enclosed invoices were for supplies for GW’s and John Parke Custis’s York River plantations (DLC:GW). Cary’s invoice sending these goods is dated 27 Feb. 1773, and on 10 July GW acknowledged their receipt.
2. GW’s fourteen hogsheads shipped in the Rising Sun, Jacob Peterson master, netted £109.15.9 ( , folio 26). See also James Hill to GW, 30 Aug. 1772. For the slipup regarding Custis’s tobacco, see GW to Cary, 20 November.
