Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] May 20th 1793

T. Lear has the honor, by the President’s command, to return to the Secretary of State the following letters &c. which were laid before the President on Saturday the 18th currt.1

A Letter from Mr Short of the 6th of March.2

Copy of Letters to & from the Governor of St Augustine.3

Copy of treaties between the Spaniards & several of the Indian Nations.4

Copy of a letter to the Minister of France of 15th curt.5

Translation of Mr Genet’s letter of Credence.

Do of Mr Ternant’s letter of recall.6

There is also enclosed a letter from Mr Vall Travers to the President, which he wishes the Secretary of State to peruse & give thereto such an Answer as may be proper.7

3Jefferson had received this correspondence, which concerned the Creek Indians, in a letter of 12 May from Spanish consuls José Ignacio de Viar and José de Jaudenes (ibid., 26:14–17). Included were letters from John Forrester, an agent of Panton, Leslie & Co., to Juan Nepomuceno de Quesada y Barnuevo, governor of East Florida, of 18 Feb., 13, 19, 28 Mar., 8, 20 April, letters from Quesada to Forrester of 16, 22 Mar., and a declaration from James Dearment to Quesada of 18 April 1793. 4Jefferson had received a copy of the 1 June 1784 Treaty of Pensacola between Spain and the Creek Indians and a copy of the 14 May 1792 Treaty of Natchez between Spain and the Chickasaw and Choctaw nations, which were enclosed, respectively, in letters from Viar and Jaudenes of 7, 12 May (Jefferson Papers, 25:677–78, 26:9–10).
