George Mercer to Robert Rutherford
[Winchester, 8 April 1756]
To the Commissary
Deliver Major Hite1 what arms, ammunition, &c. he may want, for the party going under his command against the Indians; he passing his Receipt for the arms, and obliging himself to deliver them again into the Store here, unless the men are killed by the Enemy, and the arms lost by that means.

1. Major Hite was either Abraham Hite (1729–1790) or John Hite (d. 1792), both sons of the early Shenandoah Valley settler Jost Hite. Abraham Hite, an officer in the Frederick County militia, lived on the South Branch; John Hite, also a member of the Frederick County militia, lived on Opequon Creek.
