1The enclosed papers sent by Trumbull, a Connecticut congressman, have not been identified. On 16 July, GW returned to Trumbull “a letter addressed to Mr. Jona. Trumbull from the American Captives at Algiers” (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 200). On Thomas Jefferson’s opinion of the news contained in this letter, see Jefferson to GW, 15 July. On U.S. efforts to negotiate the release of these captives, see Jefferson to GW, 8 June 1793, and note 2.
