Tobias Lear to Samuel Hodgdon
Philadelphia October 18th 1792
Sir,
The President wishes to know if the Vessel which has taken the Arms for So. Carolina has sailed if she has not, when she expects to sail, as [he] has letters prepared for So. Carolina which he wishes to send by the first vessel.1 The President likewise desires to have an Acct of the number Arms furnished from the public stores for So. Carolina.2 With great esteem, I am Sir, Your most Obedt Servt

1. The word in square brackets is supplied from the letter-book copy. The letters sent by GW to South Carolina have not been identified.
2. Hodgdon replied to Lear later on this date: “You will please to inform the President of the United States, that the Vessell that takes the Arms for South Carolina will not sail until Sunday next. Another Vessell sails for that place to day or to morrow, in which, if the President choose, he may forward his Letters.
“Six hundred Muskets with Bayonets, in complete Order are to be delivered the State of South Carolina’s Agent from the Public Stores, in consequence of the Presidents Order” (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
